Raye Faces NYSC Sanction Amid Free Speech Dispute
Ushie Uguamaye, a Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member known as Raye, alleges she’s being unfairly targeted by the NYSC for her outspoken criticism of Nigeria’s economic policies under President Bola Tinubu.
Raye, who gained attention in March for highlighting the country’s economic struggles, claims her Discharge Certificate was withheld as punishment for her views.
In a recent viral video, Raye said her service year was extended by two months, a move she believes is retaliation for her public statements.
The NYSC, however, maintains the extension was due to Raye missing the April 2025 biometric clearance, as required by its bye-laws, and not because of her political opinions.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, speaking on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” on Monday, challenged the NYSC’s explanation. He argued that Raye was present for the clearance in Eti-Osa Local Government Area but was deliberately denied approval.
Effiong accused the NYSC of failing to formally notify Raye of the reasons for her sanction, calling the action an attempt to suppress free speech.
Effiong plans to formally address the issue with the NYSC Director-General and, if unresolved, escalate it to the President, citing Section 20 of the NYSC Act. “This is about silencing dissent,” he said, noting Raye’s recent complaints about the rising cost of goods and economic hardship. He urged the NYSC to reconsider its stance to avoid tarnishing its reputation.
The controversy has sparked debate about the treatment of corps members who express critical views, with Effiong warning that Raye’s case could set a troubling precedent for free expression in Nigeria.
