To Be Many Things at Once – Multipotentialites
Human beings are not furniture to be placed in a corner
I’ve always believed that life has a funny way of introducing us to ourselves. Sometimes it comes through a job we didn’t expect to enjoy.
Other times it shows up as a random hobby we picked up on a quiet Saturday afternoon and then there are people, unique people, who don’t just have one passion or one calling. They have many.
Growing up, I used to think something was wrong with people like that. The ones who loved drawing but also enjoyed fixing gadgets, the ones who could bake soft cake and still spend hours talking about literature.
Society had taught us that focus meant picking one thing early and sticking to it forever. Anything else feels scattered, unserious, or confused.
Over time, I started to understand that these people were not confused at all. They were multipotentialites, humans created with more than one gift, more than one curiosity, more than one way to express the energy inside them.
I have one of such people as my friend. Her name is Racheal. On Monday mornings, she was the quiet girl in the front row during Literature class, the one who writes poetry in all her diaries.

Every Wednesday evening after school, she would be in the music studio helping her cousin produce a music track.
On Friday, she baked cakes and sold them to her classmates and somehow, she still found time to play the guitar during weekends.
I remember asking her during Secondary School, How do you do everything?
She said to me, I don’t think about it too much. These passions make me come alive. They are who I am.
She was basically into music, baking, selling and she was still in secondary school.
That was the first time I noticed the passion that multipotentiality carries. It’s not being everywhere at the same time.
It’s the curiosity that refuses to die, the passion to keep exploring the world from different angles.
The truth is, not everyone fits into one box. Some people live beautifully in between. They learn from here, create from there, and mix everything into something completely their own.
Human passions are like rivers, some flow straight, some split into streams and meet the ocean from different directions.
Think about hobbies too, these hobbies are little activities that make us forget the noise in our heads. Some people keep one hobby for years, others move through seasons.
Today they’re painting, next month they’re gardening, and after a while they’re learning how to edit videos. It doesn’t make their interest cheap or unserious. It simply means they are wired for exploration.

Sometimes, the very thing they tried just for fun becomes something they return to later in life. It becomes a tool, a skill, or a doorway they didn’t know they needed.
I once read a story about a man who studied law because his parents wanted him to but in his free time, he drew cartoons. He kept drawing and posting online just because it made him happy.
Years later, those cartoons turned into a published book, and that book opened doors to a career in illustration that he didn’t even think was possible. The law degree didn’t go to waste either, it helped him negotiate his contracts.
That’s the surprising part of multipotentiality, the things you learn in one area often fuel your success in another.
The world sometimes makes us feel that we must choose one thing. One career, one passion, one direction but human beings are not furniture to be placed in a corner. We grow, shift, stretch, and reinvent.
Multipotentiality teaches us that we can carry many passion at once and it also teaches patience because when you have multiple passions, life doesn’t always move in a straight line.

You may jump from one interest to another, trying to understand what fits, what feeds your soul, and what feels meaningful but every stage adds something to you. Every experience becomes part of you.
There’s beauty in allowing yourself to explore. There’s beauty in not rushing to define yourself too early. There’s beauty in waking up one day and discovering you have grown into someone you never imagined. You are now a blend of everything you’ve ever loved.
I’ve come to realise that the world needs multipotentialites more than it admits. They are the connectors, the cross thinkers and the idea weavers. They pull knowledge from different corners and turn it into fresh solutions. They bring creativity into problem solving and curiosity into the most ordinary tasks.
Not everyone is meant to be a specialist. Some people are meant to be bridges, walking, building connections that link ideas, skills, and passions in ways that only they can.
So if you’re reading this and you’ve always felt different because your heart refuses to choose just one thing,
I hope you know there’s nothing wrong with you. You are not scattered, you are not unserious, you are simply rich in curiosity, rich in potential and rich in creativity.

Multipotentiality is not confusion. It is capacity. A capacity to feel deeply, to learn widely, to grow in many directions and most importantly, a capacity to live as fully as your gifts will allow.
