Wike Opposes Emergency Rule, Says He Wanted Fubara Removed Instead
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed his disapproval of the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.
Wike made this known during a media parley in Abuja on Friday, stating that the emergency rule was not the outcome he had hoped for amid the ongoing political crisis in his home state.
“I am not happy with the state of emergency,” the former Rivers State governor said.
Last month, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, citing political instability, escalating insecurity, and recent pipeline explosions.

The president suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state House of Assembly for six months, appointing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as sole administrator to steer the affairs of the state temporarily.
The decision has generated significant national debate.
Speaking further, Wike said, “As a politician, I am not happy with the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State. I wanted the outright removal of the governor. But for the interest of the state, the president did the right thing to prevent anarchy.
“The matter is in court, but people must say the truth. The governor was gone. It’s not my responsibility to make it easy for him. As a politician, my job isn’t to make him comfortable — and that’s why there is a power game.”

Wike and Governor Fubara have been at odds since the latter assumed office, a rift rooted in the struggle for control over political structures and governance in Rivers State.
The feud also affected the state’s House of Assembly, with 27 members suspended and defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This led to the rise of factional speakers and a parallel legislative body.
