Workers Demand Probe Into Bauchi Salary Cuts

Workers across state-owned tertiary institutions in Bauchi have raised concerns over unexplained deductions in their June salaries, calling on the government to urgently address the issue.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC), which represents both academic and non-academic staff, said while it appreciated the government’s recent move to implement 90 percent of the new salary structures—COMPCASS and CONTEDISS—it was worried that several workers were underpaid.

JAC Chairman, Abubakar Ahmed, who spoke during a press conference on Thursday, said the deductions ranged from ₦2,000 to ₦40,000 and may have resulted from processing errors.

“We believe it was not intentional, but the affected staff must be paid in full. We urge the relevant authorities to quickly investigate and resolve this,” he said.

Ahmed also raised concerns over the Bauchi State Contributory Pension Scheme, noting that although the union supports any effort to secure workers’ retirement, certain provisions in the scheme could be harmful to workers’ interests.

He said JAC had already written to the Head of Service and urged the government to revisit the policy to ensure it truly serves the long-term welfare of employees.
